WTTW has launched Firsthand: Democracy, a new multiplatform initiative exploring how individuals and community organizations across the country are working to strengthen democratic institutions and civic engagements. The project highlights the role of everyday people in protecting democratic values, promoting accountability, and building stronger communities.
Beginning today, viewers can watch the initiative’s content at wttw.com/firsthand and on the PBS app. The project includes five original documentary films that examine the challenges and opportunities facing democracy in the United States today. Alongside the films, the Firsthand website features investigative reporting, additional digital storytelling, and a downloadable discussion guide designed to help communities engage in thoughtful conversations about civic participation and democratic responsibility.
Throughout the year, WTTW will also host public events and community conversations connected to the initiative. These events will explore themes such as civic participation, government accountability, and the role local communities play in sustaining democratic institutions. Details about upcoming programs and opportunities to participate can be found on the Firsthand website and at wttw.com/events.
The initiative officially launches today with a live special on Chicago Tonight at 5:30 p.m., hosted by Brandis Friedman. The program will introduce the year-long project and highlight the stories and issues that will be explored through the Firsthand series.
