Two things are happening in Portland, Oregon, that bear close attention in Chicago as events quickly unfold. <\/strong>First, as summarized on July 17 by Charlie Warzel<\/a>, an opinion writer at large for The New York Times<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thursday night [July 16] marked the 50th consecutive night of demonstrations in Portland, Ore. The protests began after the killing of George Floyd\u2014tens of thousands of people took to the streets to protest police violence and racial injustice. Since then, the protests have grown smaller, but clashes between law enforcement officers and protesters have escalated\u2014on July 12, videos circulated of a federal officer shooting a protester in the head with a nonlethal munition, resulting in a skull fracture. Coverage of the unrest has caught the attention of President Trump, who vowed to \u2018dominate\u2019 the protesters with federal law enforcement officers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Next, came the uninvited unleashing of fatigue clad,\nunidentifiable federal agents \u2013 supposedly officers<\/a>\nfrom the U.S. Marshals Special Operations Group and U.S. Customs and Border\nProtection’s Border Patrol Tactical Unit \u2013 into a state by the Executive branch\nof the federal government. These agents have been sweeping protesters (or those\nthey believe are protesters) into unmarked vans, destinations unknown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will these detainees be charged with crimes? At least 13 have<\/a>. What might those crimes be? Unknown. Will they just be released back\nonto the street? Some have been\u2014after several hours of detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 19, 2020, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler told NBC News<\/a> that the presence of federal agents was making things\nworse: \u201c\u2026They’re not wanted here.\nWe haven’t asked them here. In fact, we want them to leave.\u201d The Governor\nof Oregon, likewise, asked the President<\/a> to withdraw these agents from her state. Request denied. Oregon\nAttorney General Ellen Rosenblum has sued<\/a> to prohibit\nthese federal agents from making further arrests and continuing to violate the\nConstitutional rights of protesters and those detained. \u201cI think every American needs to be concerned about\nwhat\u2019s happening here in Portland. These federal agencies are operating with no\ntransparency and against the will of just about every leader in our state,\u201d Rosenblum said<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is happening in Portland should frighten every\nU.S. citizen. What is happening in Portland is anathema to our Democracy. It is\ncontrary to the Rule of Law. It is contrary to the transparency and\naccountability of law enforcement to the populace it is sworn to protect and\nserve consistent with the Constitution. This is not what \u201claw and order\u201d means\nin the United States, regardless of which party retains power or who sits in\nthe Oval Office.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is becoming clearer every day that this misuse of\nfederal law enforcement power will not stop with Portland. Several other cities have been threatened<\/a> with the arrival of federal \u201cassistance\u201d to handle\nprotests and crime. New York. Seattle. Philadelphia. Chicago. Cities with significant\nnon-White populations who will, likely, be primary targets for threats and\nintimidation. Cities run by Democratic Mayors in states with Democratic\nGovernors. In an election year. With a raging pandemic and a fast-rising U.S.\ndeath rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chicago \u2013 apparently a high-priority \u2013 has already been assured that federal agents are on their way. According to ABC-Chicago<\/a>, the federal government will \u201cbe focused on efforts to help the city with its pressing need to deal with gun violence, not with protesters;\u201d Lightfoot\u2019s response: \u201cWe welcome actual partnership, but we do not welcome dictatorship\u2026We do not welcome authoritarianism.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rule of law<\/a> must prevail over political opportunism. This is why Portland matters. We urge Portland, Chicago, and all other states and cities to resist this misuse of federal law enforcement. Our democracy demands no less.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
