This year, we featured two two virtual events to celebrate and recognize the incredible work our volunteers, staff, and community partners. If you weren\u2019t able to join us, you can view the panelists\u2019 discussion from May 12 and keynote presentation from May 19 below or at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.collaborationforjustice.org\/\">www.CollaborationForJustice.org<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>MAY&nbsp;12: FORUM ON A NEW ERA OF&nbsp;LEGAL SYSTEM REFORM<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The first virtual event was a panel of Chicago-based professionals discussing the new era of criminal legal system reform.&nbsp;<\/strong>Moderated by Sarah Staudt of Collaboration for Justice, the panel included April Preyar (Partner, Shiller Preyar Jarard &amp; Samuels Law),&nbsp;Cathryn Crawford (Director of Holistic Legal Services, Lawndale Christian Legal Center), Tanya Woods (Executive Director, Westside Justice Center), and Sharone Mitchell, Jr. (Public Defender for Cook County).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><iframe title=\"The Collaboration For Justice Criminal Justice Panel - Livestreamed on May 12th, 2021\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/548560808?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussion focused on how reforms to the criminal justice system are implemented and experience in practice and by community members. Their conversation centered on the changes made to improve the court system since George Floyd\u2019s murder, but how unwillingness from court system actors can derail those efforts, and what else can be done to improve these unjust systems. The panelists spoke at length discussing how these movements have dramatically changed communities and have given individuals a since of power in themselves, but that the courts have not followed. Each speaker confronted the complexities of our current criminal justice system\u2014but came to a consensus that a real cultural change must happen within the system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>MAY&nbsp;19: KEYNOTE PRESENTATION BY DR. TRACI BURCH<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The second event featured Dr. Traci Burch, &nbsp;Research Professor at the American Bar Foundation and Associate Professor of Political Science at Northwestern University,&nbsp;who delivered a keynote address discussing her research on the role of citizen activism in response to police-involved killings.&nbsp;<\/strong>Dr. Burch opened the conversation by stating her research question, \u201cWho gets protested and what factors shape the protest of police-involved killings?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><iframe title=\"The Collaboration For Justice Keynote Presentation - Livestreamed on May 19th, 2021\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/552536829?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She went on to explain the different aspects of her research and how she collected the data.
