{"id":5097,"date":"2026-01-30T08:00:37","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T14:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chicagocouncil.org\/staging\/1601\/?p=5097"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:17:40","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T02:17:40","slug":"coalition-of-chicagoland-bar-associations-statement-on-the-shooting-of-alex-pretti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chicagocouncil.org\/staging\/1601\/coalition-of-chicagoland-bar-associations-statement-on-the-shooting-of-alex-pretti\/","title":{"rendered":"Coalition of Chicagoland Bar Associations Statement on the Shooting of Alex Pretti"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"\">The Coalition of Chicagoland Bar Associations stands with the legal community in seeking accountability, transparency, and justice following the fatal shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti by federal Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis on January 24, 2026.\u00a0The Coalition has grave concerns about potential constitutional violations against\u00a0persons\u00a0who are exercising their rights of speech and assembly to protest,\u00a0observe\u00a0and record law enforcement.\u00a0The Coalition believes the following actions are necessary to achieve justice and accountability in connection with recent developments involving immigration enforcement actions in Minneapolis, Chicago\u200b,\u200b\u00a0and across the country.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Immediate Actions:<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li class=\"\">Full, independent state investigation of Mr. Pretti\u2019s shooting without federal interference<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li class=\"\">Release of all body camera footage and evidence\u00a0related to\u00a0Mr. Pretti\u2019s\u00a0shooting<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li class=\"\">Retraction of inflammatory statements labeling Mr. Pretti a &#8216;domestic terrorist&#8217;<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li class=\"\">Temporary suspension of immigration\u00a0enforcement\u00a0operations\u00a0in Minneapolis\u00a0by\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Customs and Border Protection and\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u00a0pending investigation and implementation of proper training and oversight\u200b<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Congressional Action:<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li class=\"\">Immediate oversight hearings on the pattern of deadly force and violence incidents against peaceful protestors involving federal immigration operations in Minneapolis, Chicago\u200b,\u200b\u00a0and elsewhere<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li class=\"\">Legislation mandating federal cooperation with state investigations\u00a0related to immigration enforcement<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li class=\"\">Strengthened accountability mechanisms for federal\u00a0immigration\u00a0enforcement<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Systemic Reforms:<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li class=\"\">Mandatory body cameras for all federal immigration agents<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li class=\"\">\u200b\u200bPrompt\u00a0public disclosure requirement for use-of-force incidents\u00a0arising from immigration enforcement<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li class=\"\">Establishment of a commission for independent civilian oversight of federal operations\u00a0related to immigration enforcement<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li class=\"\">Enhanced de-escalation training\u00a0\u200brelated to immigration enforcement\u00a0emphasizing sanctity of human life<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"\">\u200b\u200b\u200bWe also\u00a0observe\u00a0that when\u00a0government accounts contradict video\u00a0evidence\u00a0independent\u00a0verification becomes essential to justice. The legal profession must defend the right of citizens to record law enforcement activities, ensure preservation of video evidence, and demand that officials refrain from prejudicial statements before investigations conclude.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Our Commitment:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"\">Peaceful protestors deserve the right to exercise their constitutional rights without fear of violence from their own government.
